Step 1

We absolutely recommend you backup
Your device with iTunes/iCloud before you give this a go. This way, if something goes wrong, or you wish to remove the exploit, you can do so easily and without any loss-of-data hassles.


Step 2

All backed up? Good! Now ensure that your iOS version is actually crackable by going to Settings > General > About > Version. The current exploit only works for iPhone, iPad and iPod devices running iOS 7.0 through 7.0.4.


Step 3

If you have used an OTA (Over The Air) update in the past, the developer team recommends you use iTunes to revert back to iOS 7.0.4 to avoid complications. Save yourself the a potential headache and do it.


Step 4

Disable your passcode if you have one in place, as this is known to cause issues. Go to Settings > General > Touch ID & Passcode > Turn Passcode Off.


Step 5

Download evasi0n 7 for Mac (10.6 minimum!) or Windows (XP minimum!). Once installed, just extract the executable file from the archive and power it on. We assume that your device is already plugged to the computer, as you didn't forget to back it up via iTunes. If so, the small program will detect your device and list it as supported. Click the 'Jailbreak' button and do not interact with your device or iTunes in any way until prompted (at about 60% of the progress bar). You'll be then asked to unlock your iOS 7 device and tap the 'evasi0n 7' icon. Go ahead and do as instructed. The process will then continue, and you'll be asked once again to unlock your device.


Step 6

Once the process is done, navigate to the second homescreen and launch the 'Cydia' app. Don't touch your device while it prepares your file system. It'll take a short while, and your device will then restart. Voila! You're now officially jailbroken.


Step 7

The Cydia store will ask you for an upgrade, go ahead and opt for the complete update. Do keep in mind that the alternative store is still stuck in the iOS 6 era, so it'll clash with your UI visually. Updates to Cydia, along with a bunch of other jailbreaking essentials are expected to come soon, though there's obviously no specific date.

That's it, folks, enjoy your freshly jailbroken iOS 7 device. If your device becomes unresponsive during the process itself, you can just put your device in 'DFU' mode (Device Firmware Upgrade) and restore it.

Facebook is introducing a mobile feature called Nearby Friends that taps into that steady stream of location information so friends can track each other in real time.

The idea is to make it easy for people to meet up in real life, so they can have conversations in person instead of comment threads, temporarily replacing Likes and LOLs with eye contact and actual laughter. A live meet-up is also an excellent opportunity to grab a selfie with your pal and upload it to the Facebook owned Instagram.

In a refreshing change, the new Nearby Friends feature is not turned on by default.

Friends will not be able to see where you are unless you decide live-tracking is something you want in your life and visit Facebook's settings to turn it on. Making a potentially invasive new feature opt-in suggests Facebook has perhaps learned from some of its past mistakes and privacy problems.

You can choose to share your general location with all your Facebook friends, close friends or a customized list of people you feel most comfortable with. Further minimizing the potential stalking factor, your location is only shared with other people who are also using the feature and who have chosen to share their location with you.

When turned on, Nearby Friends shows a list of approved Facebook friends who also use the feature and shows their approximate location. A push notification can tell you how many of your friends are nearby. Open the app to see a list of pals, the neighborhood or city where they are, how many miles away that is from your current location, and a time stamp of when they where there.

There is an option to share your exact location with specific friends, which can be handy for coordinating large groups at concerts or finding someone in a crowded area. Your friends will see a little image of your face on a map for a set period of time.

Nearby Friends will be available on Facebook's iOS and Android apps, but will only work for select locations at first.

Facebook, Instagram and many other apps already include features that let people "check-in" to locations, but those location features are different because you decide if and when to share each specific location. You might check into a Starbucks downtown, but never into your home or other spot you'd rather keep private. Nearby Friends is continuously gathering details about where you are in the background instead of waiting for a manual check-in.

This is not the first time an app has used location information to physically connect friends. Similar apps such as Highlight, which got a flurry of attention in 2012, mapped out the locations of nearby strangers. Facebook also purchased a startup in 2012 called Glancee that also connected strangers. That technology evolved into this new, more private feature.

If you turn on the Nearby Friends feature, Facebook starts collecting data on your exact location and keeps details on where you've been in the past, not just places where you've used its app to check in. It also collects location information even when the Facebook app is closed.

But you can turn off this location history in the Facebook app's settings. It's possible to delete individual locations from a history, or clear the whole thing and start from scratch.

How hackers beat the Heartbleed bug

Want to stay safe on the Internet? It's time to rethink all your passwords.

That's what David Kennedy did. He's a security researcher and "ethical hacker," and remembers only one: It unlocks a password vault, an encrypted database that stores dozens of his other passwords. Each one ranges from 30 to 50 characters long.

"Even if hackers got access, it's protected and encrypted and keeps it in encrypted format," said Kennedy, who has the tech skills to crack passwords easily.
Web security tools are increasingly in focus as people scramble to change their passwords following a software bug called Heartbleed, which enabled security holes on sites thought to be secure.
Along with strong passwords and safe password storage, Kennedy also says 2-factor verification is a must for anyone signing in to a website. With this process, you enter your regular password, but that triggers a text message or a phone call with an additional code you must enter before signing on.

Robert Hansen, Vice President of Labs, WhiteHat Security, advises people not to use the same password for different websites. As a security researcher who understands hacker communities, Hansen is extreme when it comes to his own security.
"When I close my browser, the cache and cookies are removed...all third party cookies are removed," he said. "All ads are removed. All tracking systems are disabled."
Both Kennedy and Hansen agree: In an increasingly hackable web, passwords are antiquated.
"We need to move to different technologies that support something other than a password," Kennedy said.
One solution: biometrics.
Apple's iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S5 include a fingerprint scanner. Other companies are also building out biometric technology. A company called Bionym recently created a wristband that recognizes a user's cardiac rhythm for authentication purposes.
But passwords aren't going anywhere any time soon, Kennedy said, and the impact of the Heartbleed bug will be felt for a long time.
"Heartbleed is probably one of the largest security exposures that we've ever seen," he said. "It's a big deal and it's not going away soon."

Google social chief Vic Gundotra steps down

Gundotra helped launch the Google+ social network, among other products.

Google's social chief Vic Gundotra, the man primarily responsible for the Google+ social network, announced Thursday that he's leaving the company after eight years on the job.

In a post on his Google+ profile -- of course -- Gundotra mostly reflected on his time spent at Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), but he did not divulge what he would be doing next.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that Dave Besbris, the head of engineering at Google+, would be taking Gundotra's position as VP of Social. That was first reported by Re/code Thursday.
Gundotra began his time at Google working on mobile apps, but then focused his energies on launching and fostering Google+, a social network whose level of success mostly lies in the eye of the beholder. Google+ has grown impressively since its 2011 to more than half a billion users. But Google's accounting of Google+ users is controversial, since many users are not nearly as active on the social network as they are on Facebook (FB, Fortune 500) or Twitter (TWTR).
Gundotra was also responsible for spearheading Google's annual I/O conference, which brings together software developers and designers.
Prior to Google, Gundotra worked at Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500), where he served as a platform evangelist.
CEO Larry Page didn't have much to say in his Google+ post about Gundotra's exit, but he did mention that the company would continue to invest in the social network.

Internet Explorer bug lets hacker control your PC

A new bug in Internet Explorer allows hackers to commandeer your computer.

Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) is racing to address a weakness in its popular Web browser that security experts at FireEye (FEYE) revealed over the weekend. The researchers discovered that hackers have exploited the bug and created a new type of attack.

This is how it works: Hackers set up a website that installs malware when you visit it. If you're duped into visiting the website while using the Internet Explorer program, malware seeps into your computer and gives a stranger total control. You might not even notice.
"I'd say someone taking control of your computer is just the beginning of the worst case scenario," said Adrian Sanabria, a security expert with 451research.com. "Because then they steal your info, get access to your email, etc."

That's where the real danger lies. Anyone in control of your computer can spy on everything you do. If it's a PC at work, hackers can reach into anything an employee has access to.
It's worse for those using Windows XP, because Microsoft no longer supports that operating system with security patches. To them, Microsoft says: Go upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends that people ditch Internet Explorer until there's a patch -- or install special software in the meantime instead.
But this bug is more omnipresent than it seems. Lots of machines use Windows -- bank ATMs, point of sale systems, restaurant seating tools -- and Internet Explorer is their default browser. If hackers manage to send them to a bad website, that machine is now under their control. It won't be easy, but it's possible.
"You don't think of them as Windows PCs running software," said Paco Hope, a consultant with software security firm Cigital. He advises that businesses talk to equipment vendors to determine how vulnerable they are.
Because this attack relies on a few of Internet Explorer's extra features, there's a relatively easy fix: Just disable them. FireEye advises disabling the Adobe (ADBE) Flash plugin. While Microsoft works on patching the bug, its engineers suggest running your browser in "Enhanced Protect Mode." But computer experts say that will likely ruin your online experience.

To disable the Flash plugin in IE, click on "Tools," then "Manage Add-ons."

That's why the easiest solution is to just ditch Internet Explorer and use another browser, said Marius Buterchi with antivirus software maker Bitdefender. This attack doesn't affect other Web browsers like Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) Chrome, Mozilla FireFox or Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) Safari.
This type of attack is particularly nasty, because it affects every version of the Web browser from IE6 through IE11. That's more than half of the browsers in use right now, according to Web analytics site NetMarketShare.
It's not the first time hackers use add-ons like Flash to assault computers. But this hack, first publicly disclosed by FireEye in a blog post Saturday, was described as a "zero-day." That means that the attack is a unique, never-before-seen technique -- a particularly dangerous vulnerability, since it hasn't yet been patched.

Method One: Resetting A Working Device

3. Tap “Reset Device” to delete all data and restore your device’s factory settings.  The accounts that you are signed into will be displayed on the screen. By default, all of your phone’s internal storage will be wiped.

4. Confirm the process by selecting “Erase Everything“. This will delete all data and restore back to your device’s factory settings. Your phone will be as if it just came out of the box
Method Two: Resetting A Non-Booting Device
1. Power down your device.  Before you begin the reset procedure, you will need to completely power your device off. If it is frozen, you can pull the battery out to turn it off.
2. Press and hold the recovery buttons. The buttons vary from device to device, so you may need to look up the instructions for your particular phone. You will need to press and hold the buttons for a few seconds. Some of the more common button combinations include:
Volume Up + Home + Power
Volume Down + Power
Home + Power
If none of the above work, Do a Google Search for your phone’s model plus “recovery mode” e.g Google Search for Samsung SII Recovery mode.
3. Select Factory Reset. Once the recovery menu opens, you can navigate the menu with the volume buttons. You may need to open the Recovery menu to find the Factory Reset mode. Use the Power button to select your menu options. You will be asked to confirm the factory reset.
4. Wait for the restore process to compete. After your phone resets, it will be set back to factory defaults and will be like it just came out of the box.

Blackberry Unveils The New Blackberry Z3 And Q20 [See Photo]

BlackBerry has announced a new duo of smartphones at the MWC 2014 – the BlackBerry Z3 and the BlackBery Q20.

The BlackBerry Z3 is a full-touch smartphone with a 5″ display and runs BlackBerry OS 10.2.1. BlackBerry CEO John Chen says that this is the first phone to come up with the strategic partnership with Foxconn.
Update: specifications of the Z3 came in and the 5″ display boasts a HD resolution and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 chipset and 1.5GB of RAM. Internal storage is 8GB, but there’s no information if there’s a microSD card slot available.
At the back, there’s a 5MP camera, while at the front there’s a 1.1MP one. Music lovers would also like the fact that the Z3 features an FM Radio, too.

The phone will hit Indonesia in April and will cost less than $200 off contract.
